Celebrating Black History Month with the Inventor of Modern Day Central Heating

Alice H. Parker was an African American inventor whose groundbreaking work in home heating paved the way for modern central heating systems. In 1919, she received a patent for a revolutionary gas-powered furnace design, a significant advancement at a time when most homes relied on wood or coal for heat.

Parker’s design introduced the concept of using natural gas to distribute heat through ducts, improving efficiency and safety. Her innovation laid the foundation for the forced-air systems we use today, making home heating more convenient and accessible.

Despite the impact of her invention, little is known about Parker’s personal life. However, her contribution to HVAC technology remains an essential part of history, especially as one of the few Black female inventors in the early 20th century.

Today, Alice H. Parker’s work continues to inspire innovation in energy-efficient heating solutions. Her legacy reminds us of the power of ingenuity and the importance of diversity in STEM fields.
