Hennepin County Library’s Pen Pals

Are you a reader? Would you like the chance to hear an award-winning author present his or her work? Join other Minnesotans at the Pen Pals 2015-2016 author lecture series to hear engaging talks by Marlon James, Jon Meacham, and other esteemed authors. The Pen Pals series, which premiered in 1997, is the longest-running author lecture series in the Twin Cities. Pen Pals features two presentations by each visiting author and boasts more than 850 loyal subscribers.

Standard Heating and Air Conditioning is a proud supporter, with all Pen Pals series proceeds benefitting the Hennepin County Library system. 2015 Pen Pals events include:

  • October 29 @ 7:30 p.m. and October 30 @ 11 a.m.
    Marlon James is the author of several works of fiction and in 2010, The Book of Night Women won the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. He is a Minneapolis resident and currently teaches English and Creative Writing at Macalester College.
  • March 10 @ 7:30 p.m. and March 11 @ 11 a.m.
    Jon Meacham is a Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential biographer. His most recent book is Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power, a No. 1 New York Times bestseller.
  • April 21 @ 7:30 p.m. and April 22 @ 11 a.m.
    Terry Tempest Williams is a writer and editor, often described as a naturalist, conservationist, and activist. At this Earth Day event, Terry Tempest Williams will explore the relationship of culture to nature.
  • May 5 @ 7:30 p.m. and May 6 @ 11 a.m.
    Anthony Doerr won the Pulitzer Prize in 2015 for his novel All the Light We Cannot See. At this event, he will discuss the power of language to transcend barriers between privilege and hardship, past and future, and author and reader.

All Pen Pals events are held at the Hopkins Center for the Arts at 1111 Main Street, Hopkins. Arrive early to enjoy the pre-show reception with complimentary dessert and coffee, music, and book sales. Free parking is available. Proceeds from the program benefit Friends of the Hennepin County Library. Past presenters have included award-winning poet Richard Blanco, author and New York Times bestseller Jodi Picoult, and Pulitzer Prize winner Doris Kearns Goodwin.
